Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy infrastructure hit targets as far away as Siberia, more than 2,000km from the front line, undermining the availability of gasoline and diesel in Russia, the world's third-largest oil producer. The fuel ‌crisis has spread from Russia-annexed Crimea to areas in the centre and east and has also covered Siberian regions of Novosibirsk and Omsk, close to Kazakhstan's border. The Omsk region, about 2,500km from Moscow, is limiting fuel sales and the nearby Novosibirsk region is preparing to do the same, local governors said on Telegram. Abelardo de la Espriella, a populist candidate known as "The Tiger", reportedly won the second round of the presidential election on 21 June. His victory follows recent right-wing electoral successes in Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Bolivia and Ecuador. Analysts say concerns about security have been a major factor driving support for conservative candidates across the region. Many of these leaders have campaigned on promises of lower taxes, smaller government and fewer restrictions on mining and fossil fuel industries. However, several have also faced economic challenges, including budget deficits and public protests over spending cuts. The shift comes as U.S. President Donald Trump seeks to expand U.S. influence in the region through tougher anti-drug policies and new security initiatives with allied governments. Heat stress days combined with tropical nights are the leading cause of weather-related mortality, and as global warming intensifies, heatwaves are becoming longer and more frequent, exarcebating cardiovascular, respiratory and other diseases, and increasing the risk of heat-related illness and death. Events combining consecutive heat stress days and tropical nights have become more frequent and prolonged on every continent, with the most dramatic changes in Europe and north Africa and the Arabian peninsula. Heat stress is measured by the Universal Thermal Climate Index – which incorporates temperature, humidity, wind, radiation and human body response to heat – and this perceived temperature increases faster than air temperature. The entire city is now effectively in a “grey zone”, no longer controlled by anyone, Ukrainian soldiers have told the BBC. If Kostiantynivka falls, Russian forces would be able push towards Ukraine’s last remaining strongholds in the east, the cities of Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, and move closer to seizing Donbas completely, one of the Kremlin’s key objectives in this war. Starmer said he would resign as Labour leader after weeks of mounting pressure from within his party, following poor poll ratings, electoral setbacks and growing unrest among Labour MPs. He will remain prime minister until a successor is chosen. Since David Cameron quit after losing the Brexit referendum in 2016, Britain has been led by Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak and Starmer, with a seventh prime minister now set to take office. Attention has already turned to Andy Burnham, the former Greater Manchester mayor and newly elected Labour MP, who is widely seen as the frontrunner to succeed Starmer. Starmer said he would ask Labour's National Executive Committee to open leadership nominations on July 9, with the process beginning before Parliament's summer recess and a new leader expected before MPs return in September. According to Bank of England data the UK economy a Stanford analysis found that UK GDP was 6% lower due to Brexit, compared to the position had the UK remained in the EU. Other studies have put the figure at between 2% and 8%. Oil prices continue to decline after U.S. President Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed an interim agreement aimed at ending hostilities and paving the way for a lasting peace settlement. The 14-point memorandum begins a 60-day negotiation period during which Iran will permit toll-free transit through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil and gas shipping route. Under the agreement, traffic through the strait is expected to return to full capacity within 30 days. The preliminary deal leaves several contentious issues unresolved, including Iran's nuclear programme, and commits the U.S. and its allies to developing a $300 billion financing plan to support Iran's economic recovery. The “Land Bridge” proposal comprises two new deep water ports at Chumphon on the Gulf of Thailand, and Ranong on the western Andaman Sea coast, with a 90km standard gauge railway running from one side of the peninsula to the other. Around 80% of container traffic at the major ports on the Strait of Malacca is transferred between vessels, for shipping on. The Thai proposal seeks to take a slice of that, offering up to 14 days faster transit, with cost savings of as much as 30%. The operation by conventional minesweepers and state-of-the-art underwater drones could continue for 40 to 50 days before many insurance, shipping or oil companies are confident enough to sail through, according to assessments from five Western maritime security sources. That could potentially hold up tens of millions of barrels of oil, in addition to the oil supply from the Gulf already blocked since the United States and Israel attacked Iran on February 28, according to estimates based on pre-war flows. It is unclear how many mines Iran may have laid in the strait, which handled 20% of the world’s daily supply of oil and liquefied natural gas before the war. Iran, which has sought to assert its control over the waterway during the war, has threatened to deploy naval mines, without commenting on whether its forces have planted them, Reuters said. Children are particularly vulnerable to climate change because their bodies are more sensitive to its effects. UNICEF assessed exposure to eight climate hazards, including extreme heat, heatwaves, droughts, floods, wildfires, tropical storms, and sand and dust storms. The Sahel region in Africa is among the hardest-hit areas, with more than 4 million children exposed simultaneously to heatwaves, extreme heat, and sand and dust storms. In Asia, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Pakistan are particularly affected. The report found that climate risks are not limited to poorer countries. In Italy, for example, more than 6 million children are exposed to prolonged heatwaves and drought. UNICEF said a new climate risk atlas included in the report could help governments identify vulnerable areas and invest more effectively in essential services. Executive Director Catherine Russell said the tool would support better planning for the growing impacts of climate change on children. On Iran, leaders are expected to discuss details of a U.S.-Iran deal aimed at ending the war. They will also consider backing a military mission led by Britain and France to clear mines in the Strait of Hormuz. Any such operation would require approval from Tehran. Ukraine is also expected to feature prominently in discussions. European G7 members, which now bear much of the financial and military burden of supporting Kyiv, are seeking to demonstrate that Ukraine’s position has strengthened and to forge a common approach to any future negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. As holder of the G7 presidency, France is using the summit to draw attention to growing global economic imbalances. Officials point to China’s record $735 billion current-account surplus, persistent U.S. deficits and weak investment in Europe as factors fuelling trade tensions and increasing risks to the global economy. Artificial intelligence will also be a major focus. The breakthrough framework, mediated by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, marks the most significant diplomatic turn since the conflict erupted in February following joint U.S.-Israeli air strikes on Iran. A formal memorandum of understanding is set to be signed in Switzerland this Friday. U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed the truce on Sunday evening, writing on social media that the deal was “now complete.” According to statements from the mediator and Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, the pact mandates an immediate, permanent cessation of military operations across all fronts, including Lebanon. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a choke point for global energy shipping, will be lifted on Friday, alongside the termination of the U.S. naval blockade on Iranian ports. The agreement establishes a 60-day ceasefire period, during which negotiators will attempt to hammer out a more comprehensive treaty. Crucial, highly contentious issues have been deferred to these upcoming sessions, including the eventual dismantling or dilution of Iran’s highly enriched uranium stockpile and the details of international sanctions relief, Reuters said. The U.S. Department of the Interior says it is investigating what appears to be a large “8647” inscription etched into the grounds of the National Mall in Washington, DC. A press photographer positioned atop the Washington Monument captured images of the markings in the grass shortly before authorities arrived at the scene. The numbers 8, 6, 4 and 7 can be seen, although some are more clearly defined than others. The term “8647” has been adopted by some opponents of President Donald Trump as a slogan of protest against his administration. While “86” is commonly used in the hospitality industry to mean “get rid of” or “remove”, the term has also, in some contexts, been interpreted as meaning “to kill”. The “47” is widely understood as a reference to Trump’s status as the 47th president of the United States. The displaced population includes 68.6 million people uprooted within their own countries, 28.5 million refugees under UNHCR's mandate, 9 million asylum seekers awaiting decisions on their claims, 7.2 million people in need of international protection, and 6 million Palestinian refugees under the mandate of UNRWA. The report released by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) found that 14.7 million refugees and internally displaced people returned home in 2025, up 50% from the previous year and the second-highest annual total since records began in 1965. Most returns were to six countries: the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, Syria, Afghanistan, Ukraine and Myanmar. However, new conflicts have continued to drive displacement. The shift follows a series of moves by President Trump that have unsettled many European allies, including threats to annex Greenland, strikes on Iran that left Europe grappling with the fallout, pressure on Kyiv without securing a Ukraine-Russia peace deal, questions over America's commitment to NATO, and plans to reduce the U.S. military presence in Europe. Against that backdrop, it is perhaps unsurprising that majorities in every country surveyed said they do not believe the United States would come to their defence if they were attacked. The epicentre is in DRC’s Ituri province, which accounts for 94% of confirmed cases, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). At least 115 are confirmed dead, with a further 19 cases and 2 deaths in neighbouring Uganda. The WHO declared the outbreak an international health emergency on May 17 after cases were detected in both the DRC and Uganda. Ten other nearby countries are considered at risk by the African Union’s primary public health agency, while the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warned on Friday that the outbreak could spread to be similar in scale to the worst in history. Ebola killed 11,000 people in West Africa between 2014 and 2016. However, unlike that outbreak, the current crisis is caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain of the virus which has no approved treatment or vaccines, though three candidate vaccines are under development. The latest exchange has cast fresh doubt over efforts to secure a lasting settlement to the conflict, which erupted on February 28 when U.S. and Israeli forces launched coordinated attacks against Iran. The Iranian strikes, which included attacks in ‌Jordan, Kuwait and Bahrain, came after the U.S. military said it had targeted Iranian air defence, ground control stations and surveillance radar sites near the strait in response to what U.S. President Donald Trump said was the downing of a U.S. Apache helicopter on June 9. President Donald Trump has continued to insist that Washington and Tehran remain close to reaching an agreement. However, despite the ceasefire that came into effect in April, there has been little visible progress towards a broader deal, with renewed violence raising concerns that tensions could spiral further. A U.S. military helicopter has gone down off the coast of Oman, with both crew members rescued by an unmanned surface vessel, U.S. Central Command said. CENTCOM said the Boeing AH-64 Apache was conducting patrol operations in regional waters when the incident occurred. The cause of the crash is under investigation. The incident comes amid an ongoing conflict in which Iran has reportedly downed around 30 U.S. MQ-9 Reaper unmanned aircraft, alongside the loss of several U.S. fighter jets to both hostile action and friendly fire since fighting began on February 28. If confirmed, the loss would mark the first reported Apache helicopter destroyed in the conflict. In a joint statement after talks in London on Sunday, Volodymyr Zelensky, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said they would “stand firmly with Ukraine”. The five conditions include a stop to the fighting, starting negotiations from the current position in the field as well as “robust” security guarantees for Ukraine. The leaders reiterated the need for the U.S. to be part of the process at a time when President Donald Trump’s focus has shifted to the war with Iran. Back in December, the U.S. pushed Russia and Ukraine to sign up quickly to a plan to end the war, which began with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision in February 2022 to launch a full-scale invasion of its neighbour. The warring sides have recently intensified attacks against each other, with Russia using missiles and drones to attack Ukrainian cities – and Ukraine displaying increased abilities to reach deep into Russian territory with new technology, the BBC said. Around 7 million visitors are expected in the U.S. alone, with matches treated as Super Bowl-level security events and coordinated through federal, state and local agencies. Host cities have been allocated $625 million in federal funding, plus $250 million for counter-drone measures. Security plans include bans on unauthorised drones near stadiums and fan zones, with specialised police units tasked with detecting and disabling threats. FBI-led command centres in each host city will coordinate real-time responses to security incidents and suspected AI-generated misinformation. The International Police Cooperation Center in Washington DC will link law enforcement agencies across participating countries to share intelligence. In Mexico, around 100,000 security personnel will be deployed across three host cities under Plan Kukulcán, supported by military, police and specialist units including anti-drone teams and robot dog patrols. Authorities say no immigration raids are planned at matches, though action may be taken against individuals suspected of criminal activity. A new poll suggests Brexit sentiment has reversed since 2016. According to an Ipsos survey of more than 1,000 UK adults, 52% of Britons now support rejoining the European Union, while only 33% would vote to remain outside it. In 2016, 52% of voters elected to leave the EU. Nearly half support holding another referendum, though views differ on when it should occur – before or after the next general election. Support for rejoining is strongest among younger voters, while older voters remain more opposed. Israel said on Monday it hit a petrochemical plant in Iran’s southwest, along with strikes elsewhere on military targets, after U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to refrain from further attacks. In the first hit on an energy site inside Iran since the April 8 ceasefire, Israel said it struck targets at the Mahshahr petrochemical complex, while a provincial official told Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency parts of the plant were damaged. Hours earlier, Trump said new strikes by Israel and Iran would not affect his administration’s peace talks with Tehran, adding that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “doesn’t call the shots.” Trump has leaned on Israel to stop its attacks in Lebanon to allow room for a deal to end the wider war with Iran, including rebuking Netanyahu with obscenities in a phone call last week. However, earlier on Sunday Israel launched strikes in the Beirut area for the first time since the U.S. announced a truce plan for Lebanon last week. Iran fired salvos of missiles at Israeli targets in retaliation, putting U.S.-Iran peace talks at risk. But Trump insisted that an agreement to end the wider war remained well within reach, Reuters said. While Congress created the America250 commission a decade ago to oversee official events, a Trump-backed group called Freedom 250 is now organising its own privately funded celebrations. One of the biggest events will be the American State Fair, scheduled from June 25 to July 10 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The fair will feature all 50 states and six U.S. territories, and Trump is expected to open the event. Several planned concerts were cancelled after artists withdrew because of the fair's links to Freedom 250. Trump has said he will instead hold a "Rally to end all Rallies," describing himself as "the number one attraction anywhere in the world". Another major event is a UFC fight card scheduled for June 14, Trump's 80th birthday, in a 4,500-seat arena built on the White House South Lawn. Trump has suggested the structure could remain in place permanently. On July 4, a Freedom 250 fireworks display is set to replace Washington's traditional show. Organisers say it will feature 860,000 fireworks, compared with about 10,000 in a typical year. Trump has called it the world's largest fireworks display. Trump's image is also set to appear on a commemorative gold coin marking the 250th anniversary, on commemorative passports and, if approved, on a special $250 banknote. The Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI), run by the National Science Foundation, is a network of about 900 sensors, moorings and underwater gliders deployed across the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans since 2016. It provides continuous real-time data used to track ocean health, climate trends and marine ecosystems. Under the planned “descope,” four of the five operating OOI arrays would be dismantled, with removal of the instruments expected to take up to 15 months. Scientists warn this would erase a decade of continuous ocean observations, making it harder to detect changes linked to extreme weather, fisheries and coastal impacts. The decision comes as the administration rolls back climate protections and reduces funding for climate science, while also promoting deep-sea mining for critical minerals. Researchers have described the observatory as “irreplaceable”, warning its loss would leave a major gap in global ocean monitoring. The OECD has cut its global growth forecast, warning that the war in Iran, higher energy prices and persistent inflation are weighing on the world economy. In its latest quarterly update, the organisation forecast global growth of 2.8% in 2026, down from a pre-war estimate of 3.4%. It warned that if the conflict continues into 2027, growth could slow further to 2.1%. The OECD said prolonged disruptions to the Persian Gulf would increase economic and social costs, weaken investment and raise the risk of higher unemployment. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said there is an 80% chance of El Niño developing between June and August, and a 90% chance it will continue until at least November. El Niño occurs when warmer ocean waters spread across the tropical Pacific, disrupting weather patterns around the world. The phenomenon is linked to higher global temperatures, droughts, heavy rainfall, and heatwaves. The WMO said unusually warm subsurface waters in the tropical Pacific, more than 6 degrees Celsius above average in some areas, are helping drive El Niño's development. Scientists warn that a strong El Niño, combined with human-caused climate change, could make 2027 one of the hottest years on record. The last strong El Niño, in 2023-24, contributed to 2024 becoming the hottest year ever recorded. Federal law bars printing U.S. money with the image of a living person, but Trump allies in Congress have introduced legislation that would make an exception. A Trump banknote would mark the latest effort by the president and his allies to place his name and image on public symbols since his return to the White House in 2025. Trump’s signature is already set to appear on U.S. paper notes as part of celebrations marking the nation’s 250th anniversary. In March, the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts approved a commemorative gold coin bearing Trump’s image. Other initiatives include adding Trump’s name to the Kennedy Center, placing his portrait on U.S. passports, and repainting Air Force One in colours favoured by the president. The largest U.S. bill currently printed is the $100 note, which features founding father Benjamin Franklin. U.S. President Donald Trump, who will turn 80 next month, recently underwent his annual physical examination at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center amid ongoing public scrutiny surrounding his health. Trump has often portrayed himself as more energetic and physically fitter than Joe Biden was during his presidency. The rules are set out in the U.S. Constitution and the Presidential Succession Act of 1947, which establish a clear order for transferring presidential authority. If the president dies or is incapacitated, the vice president immediately takes over. In this case, JD Vance would assume the presidency and serve the remainder of Donald Trump’s term, which runs until January 2029. If both the president and vice president were unable to serve, the role would pass to the Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson. Next in line is the Senate’s president pro tempore, currently Chuck Grassley, a 92-year-old Republican lawmaker. Beyond congressional leaders, the line of succession continues through Cabinet officials, beginning with the secretary of state and proceeding in order of their departments’ establishment. To guard against a worst-case scenario, administrations designate a “survivor” for major events. This Cabinet member is kept away from the gathering to ensure continuity of government. For this event, that role was assigned to Doug Collins.
