Europe tightens border controls

An increase in legal and illegal migrant arrivals is spurring some European countries to temporarily reintroduce border checks within what is normally an area of free movement – the Schengen zone


1 Austria: Checks at border with Czech Rep. and Slovakia until Oct 15, with Hungary and Slovenia until Nov 11

2 Denmark: Checks on land and sea transit from Germany until Nov 11

3 France: Checking Schengen zone arrivals until Oct 31

4 Germany: Tighter land border controls for six months from Sep 16

5 Italy: Border checks with Slovenia until Dec 18

6 Norway: Checks at ports with connections to Schengen area until Nov 11

7 Slovenia: Border checks with Croatia and Hungary until Dec 21

8 Sweden 
Toughened border checks until Nov 11

9 Finland
Crossing stations on land border with Russia closed indefinitely
