German legend Franz Beckenbauer, one of football’s greatest ever players, affectionately known as “Der Kaiser”, has died aged 78


1964-77: Wins four Bundesliga titles during career with Bayern Munich and leads team to three successive European Cup triumphs (1974-76)

1965: International debut – first of 103 appearances for West Germany

1966: Awarded best young player at FIFA World Cup, aged 20

1972: Wins UEFA European Championships. Claims Ballon d’Or accolade – repeats feat in 1976

1974: Captains West Germany to FIFA World Cup glory on home soil

1982: Bundesliga title with Hamburg

1990: Wins World Cup as coach of combined Germany team – one of only three men to lift trophy as both player and manager

1993-2009: Returns to Bayern as coach before becoming club president
