Russian ex-navy commander shot dead

A former Russian submarine captain accused of war crimes in Ukraine has been assassinated while out jogging in southern Russia


Stanislav Rzhitsky, 42, (right) worked as mobilisation officer in Krasnodar and had previously commanded Krasnodar submarine in Black Sea

Rzhitsky blamed by Ukrainian media for submarine-launched missile strike on Ukrainian city of Vinnytsia in Jul 2022 which killed 28 people, including three children

Rzhitsky reportedly resigned from military at end of 2021 – before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine – but was not discharged until Aug 2022

Man arrested on suspicion of killing Rzhitsky named by Russian investigators as Serhiy Denysenko, born in Ukrainian city of Sumy in 1959
