Artemis mission timeline NASA’s Artemis programme aims to send humans back to the moon for the first time in 50 years ARTEMIS I Launch: 2022 Days: 42 Uncrewed mission to moon and back will test performance of Space Launch System (SLS) – more powerful than Saturn V rocket – and Orion capsule ARTEMIS II Launch: 2024 Days: ~10 First crewed test flight. Orion will take four astronauts 8,889km beyond moon – further from Earth than humans have ever been, and complete lunar flyby before return ARTEMIS III Launch: 2025 Days: ~30 First moon landing since Apollo 17 in 1972. Four astronauts aboard Orion will dock with Lunar Gateway and remain in space for 30 days. Lunar lander will then take one man and one woman down to moon’s South Pole to conduct experiments over one week ARTEMIS IV Launch: 2026 Days: ~30 No lunar landing. Mission will deliver International Habitation Module (I-HAB) to Lunar Gateway. Designed by European Space Agency and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, I-HAB will provide main living space for astronauts in station ARTEMIS V Launch: 2026 Days: ~30 Mission will deliver Canadian-built robotic arm system and ESA’s ESPRIT refuelling and communications module to Lunar Gateway. Two of four-strong crew will then fly down to lunar south pole with NASA’s Lunar Terrain Vehicle on board lander Sources: NASA, Space.com, Stratfor Pictures: NASA © GRAPHIC NEWS
