Labour party leadership contenders

Five candidates have been nominated to take part in the contest to succeed Jeremy Corbyn as leader of Britain’s opposition Labour Party


Sir Keir Starmer, 57 
Shadow Brexit secretary seen as centrist candidate and likely frontrunner in race. Served as director of public prosecutions before entering parliament in 2015

Rebecca Long-Bailey, 40 
Member of parliament for Salford and Eccles has been shadow business secretary since 2016. Widely viewed as favourite among Corbyn supporters

Lisa Nandy, 40 
Wigan MP since 2010 and former shadow frontbencher believes Labour party needs to appeal to voters outside big cities if it is to win next election

Jess Phillips, 38 
Birmingham Yardley MP has been outspoken critic of Corbyn’s leadership and lack of clarity on Brexit, as well as party’s record on tackling anti-Semitism

Emily Thornberry, 59 F
ormer barrister became MP for Islington South and Finsbury in 2005. Has served as shadow foreign secretary under Corbyn since 2016
