U.S. Open celebrates 50th anniversary The 2018 U.S. Open celebrates 50 years of tennis in the Open era with the completion of a five-year, $550 million transformation of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre USTA BILLIE JEAN KING NATIONAL TENNIS CENTRE Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, Queens, New York City Courts Arthur Ashe Stadium Capacity: 23,771 Retractable roof completed in 2016 – made from translucent Teflon-coated fabric over steel frame. Closes in less than 10 minutes, allowing all-weather match play Practice courts West Gate South Gate Steel columns Eight tripod beams support 4,500-tonne roof superstructure Piles: Driven over 50m into ground to deal with unstable soil East Gate Chase Centre Indoor courts Grandstand Capacity: 8,125 Arena completed in 2016. Features sun canopy roof and raised walkway along upper bowl, allowing fans to walk around stadium South Campus Capacity: 8,000 Field courts demolished and rebuilt from scratch in time for 2016 event, creating more seating and access for fans Louis Armstrong Stadium Capacity: 14,061 New venue with retractable roof ready for 2018.
