Russian bridge to Crimea opens
The Kerch Strait bridge is a flagship political project for Russia as it seeks to cement its hold on Crimea, annexed from Ukraine in 2014


KERCH STRAIT BRIDGE
Length: 19km, Cost: $7 billion

Road bridge: Four-lane highway for capacity for 40,000 vehicles daily. Open to cars and buses
in May and to trucks from December

Rail bridge:
Dual-railway can handle 94 trains a day – 14 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of cargo per year.
Open from early 2019

Pillars: Thousands of support pylons sunk as deep as 56m, with space between to allow strong currents to flow through
