Calls for video technology intensify

Controversial refereeing decisions in Champions League matches, along with successful deployment in recent international friendlies, have heightened calls for VAR (Video Assistant Referee) technology to be introduced throughout the highest levels of the game

HOW VAR WORKS

Review: Referee refers decision to VAR team, or VARs recommend incident to be subject of review

Replay: Video footage is reviewed by VARs, who advise referee via headset 

Verdict: Referee can decide to watch footage pitchside before taking appropriate action, or accepts VARs verdict directly
