Jun 14, 1946: Donald John Trump is born in Queens, New York, one of five children of Fred Trump, a builder and real estate developer. His grandfather is an immigrant from Germany

1950

1959-64: Attends New York Military Academy

1960

1966-68: Graduates from University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business with degree in economics. Receives medical deferment to military service during Vietnam War. Begins buying properties in Philadelphia

1970

1971: Takes control of his father’s company. Trump Management Corporation owns more than 14,000 apartments in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island

1973: Trump Management sued by Department of Justice for housing discrimination, contending that company had refused to rent or negotiate rentals “because of race and colour”. Trump
Management counter-sues for $100 million. Trump settles case without admitting guilt

1974-80: Awarded 40-year property tax break to renovate rundown Commodore Hotel. Newly-named Grand Hyatt hotel is Trump’s first major real estate victory

1977: Marries fashion model Ivana Zelnickova. They have three children, Donald Jr., Ivanka and Eric. They separate in 1990, a divorce is finally settled in 1992

1979-83: During construction of 58-storey Trump Tower more than 200 illegal Polish immigrants work for below minimum wage. Trump becomes ensnared in litigation with Local 95 – labour union linked to organised crime – over back pay and damages

1980

1982: Receives casino licence from New Jersey Casino Control Commission (CCC)

1985: Buys casino property in Atlantic City from Hilton Hotels for $325 million after CCC
denies Hilton’s casino licence application. Renames it Trump Marina

1987: Publishes “The Art of the Deal” in which he denies his German heritage, saying that his father was of Swedish descent

1988: Buys Eastern Air Shuttle for $365 million – renames it Trump Shuttle and adds gold-plated bathroom fixtures

1990

1990: Opens Trump Taj Mahal casino. Junk bonds used to finance $1 billion project

1991: Bankruptcy #1. Trump files for corporate bankruptcy. Sells his Trump Princess yacht, Trump Shuttle airline and 50% ownership in casino

1992: Bankruptcy #2. Trump Plaza casino goes bust after losing more than $550m. Trump files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy

1993: Marries Marla Maples. They have a daughter, Tiffany. They divorce in 1999

1995: Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts goes public on New York Stock Exchange, raising $140 million

1996: Miss Universe beauty pageant bought by Trump

2000

2002-08: Trump and business partner Phil Ruffin build Trump International Hotel & Tower in Las Vegas

2004: Bankruptcy #3. Trump Hotels and Casino Resorts files for bankruptcy.  $100 invested in Trump stock in 1995 is now worth $10 compared to $250 on rest of stock market. Company
emerges as Trump Entertainment Resorts. Reality-TV show The Apprentice debuts

2005: Marries Melania Knauss, they have one son, Barron Trump.Opens Trump University. School shuts in 2010. Company faces charges of illegal business practices

2009: Bankruptcy #4. Trump Entertainment Resorts goes bankrupt

2015: Announces bid for U.S. presidency in speech in which he brands Mexican immigrants
as rapists and drug dealers. Sells Miss Universe amid furore over his comments

May 2016: Trump secures majority of delegates required to become Republican Party Presidential nominee
