Pistorius to learn murder sentence

South African Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius, 29 has been sentenced to six years in prison over the fatal shooting of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013.  He had faced a possible 15-year sentence

Conflicting accounts of what happened on night of February 14, 2013

Pistorius’ version: Woke in early hours and went to balcony, not wearing his prostheticlegs, to get fan. Before falling asleep he said he had been watching TV and Steenkamp had been doing yoga

Prosecutors’ version: Witness heard arguing coming from house

Pistorius: He heard noise in bathroom and thought it was intruder. He took 9mm pistol
from under bed and shouted to Steenkamp to call police. He said room was pitch dark
and he thought Steenkamp was in bed

Pistorius: He saw open window, thought intruder was in toilet and fired through door


Prosecutors: He knew Steenkamp was in toilet. Four shots were fired, hitting Steenkamp three times. Shots fired downwards, suggesting Pistorius was wearing his prosthetic legs

Pistorius: He returned to bedroom and saw Steenkamp was not in bed.

Prosecutors: Pistol holster was found under left side of bed –where Steenkamp slept – implying it would have been impossible for Pistorius to get gun without realising she was not in bed

Pistorius: He put on his prosthetic legs, turned on light and broke down toilet door with cricket bat, before carrying Steenkamp downstairs to seek medical help
