Heightened security for Euro 2016 Following the Paris attacks last November, France is ramping up security for the Euro 2016 tournament, deploying thousands of security officials for matches and at “fan zones” across the country FRANCE PARIS Lille Lens Saint-Denis Lyon Saint-Etienne Bordeaux Nice Toulouse Marseille Venues: 2.5 million people due to attend matches. Up to 8 million expected at “fan zones” in host cities Team camps for 24 teams STADIUM SECURITY First perimeter: Extends 1km from stadium. Body search and confiscation of bags larger than 25 x 25cm Second perimeter: Tickets electronically scanned. Further body search if necessary Local police units armed with new German HK G36 assault rifles SECURITY PERSONNEL Up to 15,000 security staff recruited for over 110 sites, including stadiums, team hotels and other tournament locations At each match, average of 900 specially trained stewards, 80 health and safety personnel, as well as 200 volunteers, will work in collaboration with police Paris Stade de France: 1,200 security officials PARIS SAINT-DENIS Champs de Mars: Paris “Fan Zone” Entrances: Metal detectors installed, systematic pat-downs, CCTV and sniffer dogs PARIS FAN ZONE 130,000 square-metre area – equivalent to 30 football pitches – with capacity for up to 90,000 people Guarded around clock, with police posted outside perimeter and 400 private security officers inside NO-FLY ZONES Anti-drone technology deployed to take control of any drone violating no-fly zones enforced over all stadiums and training grounds Authorities reportedly training for possibility of drones being used to disperse chemical or biological weapons over crowds Giant screen: “New dimension” 420 square-metre screen will show every match.
