U.S. researchers believe they may be a step closer to locating the ship in which British explorer Captain James Cook sailed to Australia in 1768

1768: Cook sets sail on refitted coal ship Endeavour on scientific voyage to map Pacific Ocean

1770: Lands at Botany Bay in what is now Australia, claiming territory for British crown

1771: Ship returns to England – renamed Lord Sandwich
in 1776 and becomes troop carrier

1778: Scuttled by Britain’s Royal Navy in blockade of Narragansett Bay during American War of Independence
