Self-driving truck hits the road in U.S.

Daimler’s Freightliner Inspiration autonomous truck is driving on public roads in Nevada. Its Highway Pilot links camera and radar systems with lane stability, collision avoidance, braking, speed control and steering

Short-range radar (aperture angle 130° / range of 70 metres) Detects vehicles which could merge into lane ahead of truck

Stereo camera (45° / 100m) Detects road markings to keep truck in lane

Highway Pilot User interface keeps driver informed and accepts instructions. Driver must override system to change lanes or leave highway

Long-range radar (18° / 250m) Detects vehicles ahead – data used to maintain separation from other vehicles

Alerts: System reminds driver to take control when approaching highway exit
