1968 to 1991: Executive editor of Washington Post. During his tenure Post wins 17 Pulitzer Prizes

1971: Pushes for Post to publish Pentagon Papers – secret study of Vietnam War – in face of strong opposition from administration of President Richard Nixon

1972-74: Oversees investigation by Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein of Watergate scandal which leads directly to Nixon’s resignation in 1974 – only time a U.S. president has resigned

2013: President Barack Obama honours Bradlee with Presidential Medal of Freedom

Oct 21, 2014: Benjamin C. Bradlee dies at age of 93
