New Adobe EPS JPEG plug-in module -------------------------------- This plug-in addresses problems found reading and writing JPEG PICT and EPS files. Earlier versions of this plug-in Ð while offering exceptional compression Ð did not open the EPS file at the original height, width and pixel resolution. We have tested this new plug-in, which comes as part of the Adobe Photoshop 2.5.1b5 beta patch (which will be shipped by Adobe to Photoshop 2.5 users on availablity) and found it works extremely well. If you are using Adobe Photoshop 2.5 or later copy the EPS JPEG plug-in to the current plug-ins folder. If you are using Adobe Photoshop 2.01 copy the EPS JPEG plug-in to the same folder as the PSPrefs file. Ten steps to success Ð Using EPS JPEG ---------------------------------- For this explanation we will use a graphic entitled Picasso sale (C) 1556. The file is supplied as a self extracting archive using Stuffit Deluxe. Double click on the file in the usual way to decompress it. The decompressed file is a folder called Picasso sale (C). This folder contains three files: "Picasso" Ð this is the Adobe Illustrator file "Piccasso 1(C).EPS.JPEG" Ð this is a colour Adobe Photoshop EPS file "Piccasso 2(C).EPS.JPEG" Ð this is a second colour Adobe Photoshop EPS file. 1. Open your version of Adobe Photoshop 2. From the File menu select the Acquire option and select Decompress EPS JPEG... 3. Navigate to the folder called Picasso sale (C) and select the first file to decompress Ð "Piccasso 1(C).EPS.JPEG" Ð click Open. 4. Once the file has opened within Photoshop select Save As and remove the .JPEG suffix (that is remove the final 5 characters of the name ".JPEG"). N.B. It is important that only the "dot-JPEG" suffix is removed because the Illustrator file needs to remember the pathway to the Photoshop file. Changing the original name of the Photoshop file breaks this pathway. 5. Adobe Photoshop 2.0.1 users need to ensure that the File Format is EPS Ð not the generic Photoshop format. Adobe Photoshop 2.5 automatically selects EPS File Format. 6. Save the file in the same folder to retain the pathways. 7. Accept the Adobe Photoshop default EPS Option of 8 bits per pixel. Click OK. 8. Repeat steps 2 to 7 for the second file, "Piccasso 2(C).EPS.JPEG." 9. Quit and open Illustrator 3.2 or later. 10. Select the Illustrator file called "Picasso" and Open. The Illustrator file will automatically open the Photoshop EPS files and position them at the correct size and resolution. The composite Illustrator file can now be scaled and output as normal. This new feature of Adobe Photoshop enables large full-colour bit-mapped images to be used as part of Adobe Illustrator graphics. Linked with the new Adobe Illustrator 5 program we anticipate a new level of sophistication in newspaper graphics with file sizes small enough for dial-up services such as Graphic News.
