But enough of what went on behind the scenesÉ Having played to enthusiastic audiences in Britain and France, U.S. audiences are now about to experience the World War II movie Captain CorelliÕs Mandolin, with other major markets following in the coming weeks. Louis de BernieresÕ novel on which the movie is based has sold more than 1.5 million copies throughout the world, proving that a good, old-fashioned love story set against a backcloth of war never loses its appeal. Indeed, so poignant is the screenplay that it is said to have reduced Nicolas Cage (Face Off, Con Air, The Rock) to tears. The story is set on the Greek island of Cephalonia, where the movie was filmed. Cage plays the eponymous Italian captain who takes part in the invasion of Greece, and finds himself billeted in a village where the residents are understandably resentful. He eventually wins their affection and falls in love with Cruz (All the Pretty Horses), the daughter of the local doctor. Life becomes complicated when her fisherman fiance Bale (American Psycho) leaves to fight with the partisans. The result is a tumultuous tale that has already been described by one critic as ÒGone With the Wind meets Saving Private Ryan.Ó And Another Thing: Christian Bale trained with the British army on Cephalonia to help prepare for his role as a partisan. He said: ÒI learned how best to slit somebodyÔs throat, steal their boots and disappear quickly.Ó /ENDS Sources: www.imdb.com; www.lineone.net; www.upcomingmovies.com Release dates: Aug 17: U.S. Aug 23: Australia Sep 7: Iceland Sep14: Norway Sep 27: Hungary, Netherlands Oct 11: Argentina Nov 1: Germany Nov 9: Denmark
