All rights reserved MILLENNIUM GRANDSTAND FOR NEWMARKET By Midge Todhunter LONDON, April 26, Graphic News: SAID to be racingÕs flagship for the 21st century, the £16 million Millennium Grandstand at Newmarket Ð headquarters of horseracing Ð is the most expensive investment project ever undertaken on a British racecourse. Construction work remained on target throughout the winter and the new grandstand gets its official opening on 2,000 Guineas Day on NewmarketÕs Rowley Mile course. Designed by the same architects as the award-winning Knavesmire Stand at York (and rather slickly dubbed ÒThe 2000 in 2000Ó), the multi-purpose five storey building replaces the original, and rather dilapidated 1875 structure. The Newmarket Racecourse Company says it will provide 10,000 racegoers with spectacular views of the famous course, parade ring and winnersÕ enclosure in truly luxurious surroundings. Incorporated are private boxes, a stunning panoramic restaurant and latest video wall technology Ð showing simulcast racing from abroad, on-course replays and off-course betting. The company stresses that although membersÕ and corporate hospitality takes up the top three floors, they remain firmly committed to traditional Tattersalls patrons who will find an extra 50 percent viewing capacity in the new stand. Funding has come from various sources including a £4.5 million interest-free loan from the Levy Board. And in line with other contemporary sporting venues, Newmarket Racecourse Trust aims to find a major corporate buyer for the £2.8 million exclusive sponsor title rights of the Millennium Grandstand for the next 10 years. /ENDS
