Hundreds of fans gathered in London’s Leicester Square to see the stars arrive for the BAFTA awards ceremony – widely billed as the British Oscars.
“I am forever grateful to Sam Mendes for casting me in this role. It was the most incredible part I have ever been given,” Kevin Spacey said in his acceptance speech for his Best Actor award. Veteran star Michael Caine, 67, was awarded a BAFTA fellowship in recognition of his long, high-profile service to the British film industry. “The fellowship, that’s the thing for me. It's the highest award you can get in England in the cinema,” he said, fresh from collecting an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in Cider House Rules. Britain’s Maggie Smith won the Best Supporting Actress award for Tea with Mussolini and fellow Briton Jude Law was named Best Supporting Actor, beating also-nominated Michael Caine. |
