Elected president for a second term by a landslide in 1972, Richard Nixon’s popularity plummeted after he was found to be linked to a break-in at the Democratic Party HQ during his re-election campaign. Taped conversations confirmed he had lied to Congress about his involvement in the Watergate affair and impeachment proceedings began.
