All rights reserved GOODWOOD MOTOR CIRCUIT ROARS BACK TO LIFE By Midge Todhunter LONDON, September 10, Graphic News: Motor racing enthusiasts aside Ð if youÕve any romance in your soul, then the imminent re-opening of the historic Goodwood Motor Circuit at Lord MarchÕs West Sussex estate may be just be the ticket. ItÕs the chance of a lifetime to see some of the immortal names of motor racing back in action again for this extraordinary occasion. Nostalgia is the keynote, with 12 veteran car events set to roar the 2.5-mile circuit back to life over a three-day international meeting which gets underway on Friday, September 18. The red-letter day looks like being Sunday, when such legends as Sterling Moss, Jack Brabham, Tony Brooks, John Surtees and Roy Salvadori, amongst others, line up in a Ôdream gridÕ for what promises to be the historic motor event of the year. Organisers say the famous Goodwood circuit has been updated in safety and amenities, without losing the intrinsic character of the 1960s era. Back then many spectators Ð baulked by earth bank barriers Ð saw only a fleeting glimpse of the top of a crash helmet zipping by. But today, new viewing banks give unobstructed views of the majority of the track. Gently undulating, it still presents unsettling gradients and adverse cambers, particularly through its outward leg. The great Stirling Moss, possibly the most versatile driver of all time, was the first to lap this tricky circuit at an average of more than 100mph. Ultimately, two other world champion drivers Ð Jim Clark and Jackie Stewart Ð share the official record at over 107mph. ÔIt will be a spectacular piece of theatre Ð a time-warp for all those who remember the circuit in the old days, and a wonderful new opportunity for fans of the old cars and drivers,Õ says Lord March.
