The Sea Mammal Research Unit (SMRU) has developed electronic tags containing sensors which measure sea temperature, and the depth and swimming speed of individual animals. The tags, the size of a computer mouse and weighing less than half a kilo, can withstand the pressures at depths of more than 3,000 metres. When the animal surfaces to breathe, a miniature computer transmits the information as sound bites via satellite to the SMRU database. The data analysis system developed at the Unit then allows scientists to visualise, by way of computer images, the undersea life an animal. For SMRUs Professor Mike Fedak, the joy of the system lies in its flexibility. It can help link information on the success of an elephant seals breeding with its hunting strategy in the inaccessible arctic and antarctic environments. It can also track the migration of beluga whales, helping estimate their distribution and population size, a vital tool in protecting these hunted species.
