He has been convicted of organising the 1985 hijacking of Italian cruise liner, Achille Lauro, in which an elderly, wheelchair-bound American, Leon Klinghoffer, was murdered. Abbas is believed to be in Iraq. ABU NIDAL Ð Palestinian terrorist mastermind. Real name Sabri al-Banna, he is one of the worldÕs most wanted terrorists, accused of dozens of atrocities including the 1985 attacks on Rome and Vienna airports in which 20 people were killed and the 1986 attack on an Istanbul synagogue in which 22 Jewish worshippers were massacred. Believed to be based in Libya. GEORGE HABASH Ð Also known by the nom de guerre of Al Hakim. The veteran radical leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) captured the worldÕs attention with the simultaneous hijacking of three airliners in 1970. The planes were flown to the Jordanian desert where the passengers were evacuated and the aircraft blown up. The PFLP and Hamas, the most active Palestinian groups still fighting Israeli occupation, belong to a 10-member radical Palestinian alliance dedicated to wrecking the Oslo-Washington, PLO-Israeli peace deal which set up Palestinian self-rule areas in Israel. AHMED JIBRIL Ð Radical Palestinian leader who gained notoriety after masterminding the hijacking of an Israeli El Al airliner in 1968. In 1970, his group planted a time-bomb aboard a Swissair jet flying to Tel Aviv, killing all 47 people aboard. Believed by many to be behind the 1988 bombing of Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie which killed 270 people. Jibril claims that the naming of two Libyan suspects has cleared him of any involvement in the atrocity. Jibril is currently based in Damascus. CARLOS ÔTHE JACKALÕ Ð Real name Ilich Ramirez-Sanchez, also known as Carlos Andres Martinez-Torres, Hector Lugo Dupont, Glenn Gebhard, Cenon Marie Clarke, Flick Ramirez, Adolf JosŽ Muller Bernal and Ahmed Adil Fawaz. Born 12 October 1949 in Caracas, Venezuela. The Jackal was the worldÕs most wanted man in the 1970Õs, linked to the massacre of 11 Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics in 1972, the wounding of British millionaire Edward Sieff in 1973 and the attack on OPEC headquarters in Vienna in 1975 in which three people were killed and 11 taken hostage. Carlos is currently in a French jail charged with the 1982 bombing of an Arab newspaper in Paris which killed a pregnant woman and wounded 63 other people. TAMMARO MARCELLO DELLÕOMO Ð Italian left-wing Red Brigades terrorist linked to a string of attacks in Italy in the 1970s and early 1980s. Omo, 28, has been on the wanted list since 1989 on charges of subversive association, terrorism and armed insurrection. Omo, who is believed to have lived for several years in Paris, was arrested this week by Italian police near Naples. The most audacious attack by Red Brigades guerrillas was the 1978 kidnap and murder of former prime minister Aldo Moro. Most Red Brigades members are now either behind bars or have renounced violence. IMAD MUGHNIYEH Ð Leader of Islamic Jihad, responsible for kidnappings and suicide bombings that have killed hundreds of Americans, French and Israelis in Lebanon. Accused of taking part in the 1985 hijacking of a TWA airliner in which a U.S. Navy diver was murdered. HASSAN EZZEDINE Ð Accused of the 1985 TWA hijacking with Mughniyeh. He is believed to have been involved in the 1989 hijacking of a Kuwait Airways jumbo jet in which two people were murdered. ENDS
