Beatles New York 1st Time poster, £100-120 ------------------- Text of press release from Phillips auctioneers Roll up for the Magical Mystery Tour The biggest collection of Beatles memorabilia ever to be offered for sale at auction is to be sold by Phillips. The Contents of the Trocadero Beatles Exhibition is to go under the hammer on April 21. The collection covers a huge range of Beatle items, instruments, clothing, photographs, art work and even marriage certificates from their early days onwards. Before Brian Epstein discovered the Beatles and made them into the best known group of all time they regularly performed in the Cavern Club in Liverpool. The Cavern Club was well known in the fifties and sixties as a place for new talent and it was here that Epstein first saw the group perform and realised their potential. The Cavern Club Hammond organ which was in use at the time is expected to fetch in the region of £20,000. After that initial discovery the Fab Four enjoyed a worldwide popularity which surpassed all that had gone before and any item pertaining to the group now has a value. The collection includes stage suits and jackets which were custom made for the Beatles by D A Millings and Son of Liverpool, demonstrating that despite new found fame the band remained loyal to their Liverpool roots. A John Lennon stage suit, worn in 1964, would have been the height of fashion at the time with its collarless tan silk jacket edged with brown velvet (estimate: £4,000-6,000). A similar suit in black belonged to Ringo Starr and is estimated at £3,000-4,000. It was their music that made the Beatles legendary and it is fitting that the sale should include some of their most well used instruments Ð guitars, pianos and drums. John LennonÕs upright Steinway piano which he used to compose ÔImagineÕ and other songs is on offer at £15,000-25,000 and his black Gretsch guitar which he played on many of the early records is expected to fetch in the region of £50,000. Two guitars which belonged to George Harrison are also included, one a Gretsch (estimate: £30,000-40,000) and the other a Harp tone guitar (estimate: £15,000-25,000). One of Paul McCartneyÕs Hofner violin bass guitars is estimated in the region of £30,000. The drum head that was used on the cover of the Sgt. Pepper album is estimated at £1,500-2,000. The private lives of the Beatles generated almost as much interest as their music. The marriage certificates from both of John LennonÕs unions are included in the collection. The first certifies his marriage to Cynthia Powell which was witnessed by a James Paul McCartney on 23 August, 1962 (estimate: £3,000-4,000). The second certificate details LennonÕs marriage to Yoko Ono in 1969. Clearly given to a friend as a Christmas gift the certificate is mounted and framed with a Christmas greeting and a doodle and is signed by John and Yoko (estimate: £5,000-7,000). The fame and popularity of the Beatles covered the world and fans can still be found far and wide. Bearing this in mind who knows where a model of the Yellow Submarine, complete with full psychedelic visuals (estimate: £15,000-25,000) will end up? Smaller value lots include the original BEA bags which the Beatles were photographed holding on their first trip to New York to play at the Shea Stadium in the early 1960Õs (estimate: £300-400) each. The sale will consist of 500 lots and is expected to raise in the region of £300,000 with prices ranging from £50-£50,000. Source: Phillips
