Grand Tours: Tour de France 2024

Stage race: Bilbao-Paris

The three Grand Tours of the UCI World Tour represent the greatest and most historic challenges in world cycling. Each of the classic stage races covers 21 days and thousands of kilometres, from time trials and sprints to gruelling climbs and vertiginous descents.

The 2024 Giro d’Italia route, starting in Turin on May 4 and finishing in Rome on May 26, will feature a challenging course which includes two individual time trials, six mountain finishes and a final-week crescendo in the Dolomites.

For the first time in 50 years, the Tour de France will not see a Champs-Élysées finish, as the Olympic Games are to be held in Paris, and will instead end with a hilly time trial in Nice. For the first time, the Grand Départ is in Italy, with riders setting off from Florence on June 29. The first three stages pass through the provinces of Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna and Lombardy before crossing the border on the fourth stage to Valloire.

The 2024 Tour de France Femmes, the third edition of the Tour, will will not take place immediately after the men's tour due to the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics. Instead, it will be held in the short gap between the Olympic Games and the 2024 Summer Paralympics in mid-August. It will have its first Grand Départ outside France — with three stage starts in the Netherlands, starting in Rotterdam.

The 2024 Vuelta a España will start in the Portuguese capital Lisbon and conclude in the Spanish capital, Madrid, covering a distance of 3,265km over 21 stages.

SUMMER OLYMPICS

Paris 2024 Olympic Games: Paris 2024

32 sports, 329 events

The 2024 summer Olympic Games, the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad, take place in Paris, France.

Paris will be the main host city, but the Games will also take place in 16 cities spread across Metropolitan France and one in Tahiti—an island within the French overseas country and overseas collectivity of French Polynesia—as a subsite.

Having previously hosted in 1900 and 1924, Paris will become the second city (after London) to host the Summer Olympics three times. Paris 2024 will mark the centenary of Paris 1924, be the sixth Olympic games hosted by France (three in summer and three in winter), and the first Olympic Games in France since the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville. The event will return to its traditional 4-year Olympiad cycle, as the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo was delayed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Games would be the first of three successive Summer Olympics to use only two official languages (English and French).

The Games will feature the debut of breaking (breakdancing) as an Olympic event.

The preparation for the Games has been marred by the ongoing controversy surrounding the potential participation of Russian and Belarussian athletes.

The Paris Olympics are expected to cost $8.5 billion.

UEFA Champions League: Champions League 2024/5

Europe’s premier football competition

The 70th season of Europe's elite club competition, and the 33rd since it was renamed the UEFA Champions League, this is the first under the new format. It kicks off on 9 July 2024 with the qualifiers, and runs until the final on Saturday 31 May 2025.

The present Champions League group stage includes 32 participants divided into eight groups of four. From the 2024/25 season, 36 clubs will participate in the Champions League league phase (former group stage), giving four more sides the opportunity to compete against the best clubs in Europe. Those 36 clubs will participate in a single league competition in which all 36 competing clubs are ranked together.

Under the new format, teams will play eight matches in the new league phase (former group stage). They will no longer play three opponents twice – home and away – but will instead face fixtures against eight different teams, playing half of those matches at home and half of them away. To determine the eight different opponents, the teams will initially be ranked in four seeding pots. Each team will then be drawn to play two opponents from each of these pots, playing one match against a team from each pot at home, and one away.

From the round of 16 onwards, the competition will continue to follow its existing format of knockout rounds leading to the final staged at a neutral venue selected by UEFA.

Grand Slams: Wimbledon 2024

All England Tennis Club, grass court

The Grand Slam tournaments, also referred to as majors, are the world's four most important annual professional tennis tournaments. They offer the most ranking points, prize money, public and media attention, the greatest strength and size of field, and the longest matches for men (best of five sets, best of three for the women). The tournaments are overseen by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), but both the ATP and WTA award ranking points based on players' performances in them.

The four Grand Slam tournaments are the Australian Open in January, Roland Garros from late May to early June, Wimbledon in late June to early July, and the US Open in August–September, with each played over two weeks. The Australian and the United States tournaments are played on hard courts, the French on clay, and Wimbledon on grass. Wimbledon is the oldest tournament, founded in 1877, followed by the US in 1881, the French in 1891, and the Australian in 1905, but it was not until 1925 that all four were held as officially sanctioned majors.

UEFA Champions League: Champions League Play-offs Draw

Play-off draw

SAILING

America’s Cup: America’s Cup 2024

Barcelona, Spain

The America's Cup is a sailing competition with two yachts, one from the club that won the previous America’s Cup, and a challenger selected from a series of prior matches. Although established by a Deed of Gift as a perpetual challenge cup for friendly competition between foreign countries, the deed has been modified over the years to allow the specification of the yachts for each race to pioneer high-performance technology.

The trophy, affectionately known as the "Auld Mug", is an ornate sterling silver bottomless ewer crafted in 1848 by Garrard & Co, bought by Henry William Paget, 1st Marquess of Anglesey, and donated to the Royal Yacht Squadron's 1851 Annual Regatta around the Isle of Wight. Today the cup is officially known as the "America's Cup" after the yacht that won in 1851.

Grand Slams: US Open 2024

USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, New York City
